Biopsy Post-Op Instructions
Patient Home Care Information
As discussed with you prior to surgery, Drs. Lenox or Peterson have performed a biopsy in which either a portion of or the entire lesion has been removed. This specimen will be sent to a pathologist for identification. Dr. Lenox or Dr. Peterson will review these results with you at your 10 day post operative appointment.
Swelling
Swelling is very normal after this type of procedure. Place the ice pack you were given on the surgical site or in the area for 20-30 minutes at a time and then take a break for 30 minutes. Continue this for the next 48 hours.
Bleeding
Some bleeding or oozing of the surgical site is normal for the next 48 hours. A gauze pack has been placed at the biopsy site. Leave this in place for the next 30 minutes. At that time change the gauze pack it if needs to be changed.
Diet and Food Suggestions
Soft, cool foods are the best to eat after a biopsy procedure. You should avoid hot, spicy, and abrasive foods during the healing process.
Hygiene
Do not rinse, spit, or brush your teeth the first day. You may start to brush your teeth the next day after your procedure. Also, start some gentle salt water rinses. Do these 2-3 times a day for the next several days.
Pain Management
When you get home, eat a little something and then take one of your pain pills in accordance with the prescription. It is best to eat about 20 minutes prior to taking your medication. You can take 400-600mg of Ibuprofen or Advil in addition to the pain pills.
Sutures
If sutures were placed, they will dissolve on their own in about 7-10 days. If the biopsy was done on your lip, avoid stretching your lips by opening wide or smiling. If the biopsy was done on your tongue, try to limit your tongue movements.
AVOID SMOKING FOR 72 HOURS.
